The Standardized Cannabis Symbol. When, where, what size.

The red 'THC' stop-sign required on Canadian cannabis products - when, where, and what size.

The standardized cannabis symbol on a Canadian cannabis product package: red octagon with white cannabis leaf and THC text
Overview

The Standardized Cannabis Symbol

The Red Octagon

Canada's standardized cannabis symbol is a red octagon containing a white cannabis leaf (occupying about two-thirds of the space) and the letters "THC" in black text (the remaining third). Health Canada introduced it under the Cannabis Act and Cannabis Regulations as part of the plain packaging rules that took effect October 17, 2018. The design works like a stop sign: you see it and you immediately know what it means.

When the Symbol Is Required

The symbol is mandatory on the label of every cannabis product where the THC concentration exceeds 10 micrograms per gram (10 µg/g), taking into account the potential to convert THCA into THC. That threshold captures most recreational products sold in Canada, including dried cannabis, cannabis extracts, edibles, and topicals. If your product sits at or below 10 µg/g, the symbol is voluntary, though Health Canada recommends using it when the product still contains potentially intoxicating amounts of THC (for example, a standard cannabis beverage under the threshold but with a total of 2.5 mg THC).

Exact Colour Specifications

The red is not just any red. Health Canada prescribes exact values, and your printed symbol must match within a reasonable tolerance:

  • Red: Pantone 185, CMYK C0 M100 Y92 K0, RGB R235 G0 B41, HTML #EB0028
  • Black: CMYK C0 M0 Y0 K100, RGB R0 G0 B0, HTML #000000
  • White: CMYK C0 M0 Y0 K0, RGB R255 G255 B255, HTML #FFFFFF
  • The symbol must have a white border of at least 2 points on all sides

If your printer uses a slightly different red, the package is technically non-compliant. We calibrate our printing to the Health Canada spec on every Canadian run. It is a detail most people would not think about, but regulators do check.

Minimum Size and Placement

The symbol must be at least 1.27 cm by 1.27 cm (roughly half an inch square). If the size is changed, the dimensions must remain proportional vertically and horizontally. You cannot stretch or squash it.

Placement is specific: the symbol must appear in the upper-left 25% of the principal display panel, oriented so its text reads left to right under normal conditions of purchase. The principal display panel is the surface most likely to face the customer. On a stand-up pouch, that is the front face. On a jar, it is the main label. On a box, it is the front panel.

It is prohibited to display any representation, image, sign, mark, or symbol that resembles or could be mistaken for the standardized cannabis symbol. You cannot make your own version of it.

Plain Packaging Context

The symbol does not exist in isolation. It sits within a broader set of plain packaging rules:

  • Single uniform colour: The container must be one uniform colour, no fluorescent or metallic finishes. The colour must contrast with the yellow health warning box and the red cannabis symbol.
  • Smooth texture: No raised features, embossing, or decorative ridges on containers or coverings.
  • No scent or sound: Containers cannot emit either.
  • No cut-out windows on containers (except for dried cannabis, fresh cannabis, and seeds, where cut-out windows are permitted under strict conditions).
  • No brand elements on the container surface itself, with one exception: a single brand element is allowed on the label.
  • Health warning message: A yellow box with a bilingual warning must also appear on the principal display panel, with the first sentence in bold and attribution reading "Health Canada / Santé Canada" in the bottom-right corner.

What This Means for Your Packaging

Every Canadian cannabis order we produce gets the symbol placed correctly. That means the right red, the right size, the right position on the panel, and the right contrast against the background colour. We download the high-resolution symbol directly from Health Canada's official source and calibrate our printing to the specified colour values. If your product falls under the 10 µg/g threshold, we can advise whether voluntary inclusion makes sense for your market.

Health Canada also publishes the high-resolution standardized cannabis symbol file for download by licence holders.

Questions

Everything you need to know.

What size must the standardized cannabis symbol be?
At minimum 1.27 cm by 1.27 cm (approximately half an inch square), placed in the upper-left quarter of the principal display panel, on a background it clearly contrasts with. If the size is changed, the dimensions must remain proportional vertically and horizontally.
What exact shade of red is required for the cannabis symbol?
Health Canada specifies the colour as Pantone 185, which translates to CMYK C0 M100 Y92 K0 and RGB R235 G0 B41 (HTML #EB0028). The symbol also requires a white border of at least 2 points on all sides. If your printed symbol doesn't match within a reasonable tolerance, the package can be flagged. We calibrate to this spec on every Canadian print run.
When is the standardized cannabis symbol required?
The symbol is mandatory on any cannabis product where THC concentration exceeds 10 micrograms per gram (10 µg/g), taking into account the potential to convert THCA into THC. That covers most recreational products. For products at or below 10 µg/g, the symbol is voluntary, though Health Canada recommends it when the product still contains potentially intoxicating amounts of THC.
Does the cannabis symbol need to be on every side of the package?
No. It goes on the principal display panel only, specifically in the upper-left 25% of that panel. The principal display panel is the surface most likely to face the customer under normal conditions of purchase. For most products that's the front. On a stand-up pouch, it's the face panel. On a jar, it's the main label face.
What happens if I forget the symbol on my packaging?
Your product can be pulled from shelves. Health Canada inspects packaging during licensing and through spot checks at retail. Missing the symbol is one of the most common compliance failures. It's a small thing that's easy to miss but the consequences are real. We never ship a Canadian order without verifying the symbol placement.
Can I modify the cannabis symbol or use my own version?
No. The Cannabis Regulations prohibit displaying any representation, image, sign, mark, or symbol that resembles or could be mistaken for the standardized cannabis symbol. You must use the official high-resolution file from Health Canada. The dimensions must remain proportional if resized, and the colours must match the specified values.
Is the standardized cannabis symbol used outside of Canada?
Not in the same form. The US doesn't have a federal standardized symbol for cannabis. Individual states have their own warning symbols and labels. If you sell in both Canada and the US, your Canadian packaging needs the red octagon and your US packaging needs whatever your state requires. They're different systems.
Where can I download the official standardized cannabis symbol file?
Health Canada publishes the high-resolution symbol on their official website. Licence holders can download it from the Standardized Cannabis Symbol page on Canada.ca. We download directly from this source for every Canadian print run to ensure the file meets the regulatory specification.
Does the symbol need to be on the wrapper as well as the container?
If a wrapper is used (for example, foil around an edible), the wrapper must display the standardized cannabis symbol if the product exceeds 10 µg/g THC. The wrapper must also meet the same plain packaging requirements as the immediate container, though the wrapper itself does not need to be child-resistant.
What other labelling elements must appear alongside the symbol?
The principal display panel must also include: the brand name, the health warning message in a yellow box (bilingual English and French), and the total THC and CBD content displayed in bold type. The container must be a single uniform colour that contrasts with both the yellow warning box and the red cannabis symbol. All required information other than the brand name, symbol, and health warning must be on a white background in black text, at least 6 points in size, in a standard sans-serif font.
