Custom Mylar Bags Built for Cannabis Brands That Refuse to Compromise

I've been in packaging for 30 years. I've seen every shortcut, every flimsy import, every broker promising the moon and delivering bags that don't seal right. That's exactly why CropPak exists. We run our own factory floor. We control the film, the ink, the dies, and the quality checks from the moment raw material arrives to the second a pallet leaves our dock.

When you order custom mylar bags from CropPak, you're not submitting a request to a reseller who forwards it to someone overseas. You're talking to the operation that physically produces your packaging. That changes everything about how fast, how honest, and how good your experience is.

What Makes CropPak Mylar Different

Most custom mylar bags sold online come from one of three giant Asian converters. The broker lists a product, takes your artwork, forwards it, waits six weeks, and ships you a pallet. If the registration is off or the zip seal doesn't engage properly, you're stuck filing a claim with someone who doesn't actually make anything.

We don't work that way. Our bags are produced in our facility on equipment we maintain ourselves. We inspect every run. If a heat seal isn't hitting the right pull strength, we catch it before it ships. If a Pantone match is off by half a shade, we adjust the plates and rerun. You get the kind of quality control that only happens when the person answering your email can walk 40 feet and watch your bags come off the line.

That also means we can do things brokers can't. Need a CO2 vent added because your product off-gasses? Done. Need a custom die shape that isn't in any catalog? We'll cut it. Need 5,000 bags split across four sizes with the same artwork? No problem. When you control production, you control the options.

Why Multi-Layer Barrier Construction Matters

Mylar isn't one material. It's a brand name that became shorthand for metallized polyester film, and the bags people call "mylar" are actually multi-layer laminates. The quality of those layers determines whether your product stays fresh for two months or two weeks.

Our bags use a high-barrier construction that includes a polyester outer layer for print receptivity and structural strength, an aluminum metallized layer that blocks oxygen and light transmission to near-zero levels, and a food-grade inner sealant layer that bonds cleanly under heat. That stack is what protects terpene profiles, prevents oxidation, and keeps moisture where it belongs, outside the bag.

Cheap single-layer bags leak. They let light through, which degrades cannabinoids. They absorb odors instead of containing them. They lose seal integrity after handling because the layers aren't bonded properly. You save eight cents per bag and lose a customer who blames your brand for stale product. The math doesn't work.

Every CropPak bag meets FDA and USDA compliance standards for food-grade contact. The inner layers are tested for compatibility with cannabis flower, concentrates, edibles, and pre-roll products. We can provide documentation for compliance audits and dispensary verification programs.

Every Size Explained

Cannabis packaging isn't one-size-fits-all. You need the right bag for the right product, and choosing too large wastes material and looks sloppy, while choosing too small risks overfilling and seal failure. Here's the full size range we produce:

  • 1g bags: Small pouches for single pre-roll packs or sample flower. Tight, compact, minimal headspace.
  • 3.5g (eighth) bags: The most common flower bag. Fits a standard eighth with room for a humidity pack if needed.
  • 7g (quarter) bags: For premium flower portions or multi-pack pre-roll sets.
  • 14g (half ounce) bags: Larger format for bulk-conscious consumers or dispensary display stock.
  • 28g (ounce) bags: Full ounce flower packaging. The workhorse size for many brands.
  • 1 lb bags: Bulk packaging for wholesale, distribution, or processor-to-dispensary transfer.
  • Custom sizes: If you need something between these sizes or entirely different, tell us the dimensions. We'll cut a die.

Each size is engineered with the appropriate seal width and material thickness for its volume. A 1g bag doesn't need the same construction as a 1 lb bag, and we adjust accordingly. That's not a luxury feature, it's just correct manufacturing.

The Finish Menu

Finish is what your customer touches before they open the bag. It sets the perceived value of your product before they ever see what's inside. We offer five finish options:

  • Matte: Soft, non-reflective, premium feel. The finish most high-end cannabis brands choose because it photographs well and looks expensive on a dispensary shelf.
  • Gloss: High shine, vivid color saturation. If your brand identity is bold and energetic, gloss makes your artwork pop under display lighting.
  • Holographic: Prismatic effect that shifts with viewing angle. Eye-catching for promotional products or limited drops.
  • Clear window: A transparent panel that lets customers see the product inside. Required by some state regulations and preferred by brands selling visual quality as a selling point.
  • Kraft: Natural paper-look exterior with full barrier interior. For brands positioning around sustainability and earthy aesthetics.

You can mix finishes with print effects. A matte bag with a spot gloss logo is one of the most effective combinations in packaging design. The contrast reads as intentional and premium without being loud.

Print Effects and Customization

Printing on mylar is different from printing on paper. The metallized surface affects how ink colors read, and the lamination process means you need a printer who understands layer order, opacity, and how effects interact with barrier film. We handle all of this in-house.

Available print effects include:

  • Foil stamping: Metallic foil applied with heat and pressure for gold, silver, copper, and holographic accents.
  • Metallic inks: Ink mixed with metallic particles for a subtler shine than foil stamping. Good for large areas where full foil would be too expensive.
  • Pantone matching: We match your specific Pantone color references so your bag matches the rest of your brand system.
  • Spot UV: A high-gloss UV coating applied to specific areas of the design for contrast against a matte or gloss background.
  • Hole punch: Retail hang-tab holes for dispensary pegboard display.
  • CO2 vents: One-way gas release valves for products that off-gas, preventing bag inflation without compromising barrier integrity.

Compliance and Child-Resistant Certification

If you're selling cannabis in North America, child-resistant packaging isn't optional. We've been certifying CR bags since the regulations first dropped, and we know the standards cold.

Our child-resistant closures are certified to 16 CFR 1700.20, the federal standard for special packaging, and tested to ASTM D3475, the standard for child-resistant packaging performance. We maintain documentation for every CR product we manufacture, and we can provide compliance paperwork for your regulatory filings, dispensary onboarding, or state license applications.

We offer multiple CR closure types including press-to-close zippers that meet the standard, CR zip seals designed specifically for cannabis packaging compliance, and tear notch openings paired with CR inner layers for products that need dual access protection. Not every bag needs to be child-resistant, but when it does, you need to know the certification is real and current. Ours is.

The Factory-Direct Pricing Model

Here's how buying from CropPak works. You send your artwork, specs, and quantity. We calculate the actual production cost, add our margin, and send you one number. That number is the price. There are no line items for setup, no plate fees tacked on after you've approved the quote, no surprise freight charges.

When you buy from a broker, the quote you receive includes their markup plus the manufacturer's markup. You're paying two companies for one product. When you buy from CropPak, you're paying one company. The one that actually makes the bags.

Same-day quoting means you're not waiting a week to find out if the project is viable. Send specs in the morning, get a quote back by afternoon, approve artwork, and we start production. For repeat orders, we keep your plates and specs on file, so reordering takes minutes, not weeks.

Volume pricing scales honestly. The more you order, the less it costs per unit, because our efficiencies improve with larger runs. We pass that savings through. There's no game where the first price is artificially high so we can offer a "discount" later. The first price is the real price.

This is how packaging should work. Direct. Honest. Fast. Made by the people you're talking to.

Product Knowledge

Is This the Right Packaging for Your Product?

Custom Mylar bags form the backbone of retail cannabis packaging, typically manufactured as stand-up pouches (doypacks) or flat pouches tailored with specific brand colors, finishes (matte, gloss, soft-touch), and specialized windows. The term 'Mylar' is technically a trademarked name for stretched polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET) film, but in practical packaging it refers to a multi-layered laminate structure combining an outer printable PET layer, a middle barrier layer of aluminum foil or metalized PET, and an inner food-grade sealing layer of PE or LLDPE. The construction is engineered as a tripartite system where no single material can satisfy all five requirements of cannabis packaging: oxygen barrier, light block-out, moisture control, odor containment, and commercial printability. The PET outer layer provides structural rigidity and puncture resistance while serving as a printable surface; the aluminum core physically blocks and reflects UV light, oxygen, moisture, and volatile organic compounds; and the LLDPE inner layer provides a chemically inert, food-grade contact surface that is heat-sealable for hermetic fusion. For premium custom cannabis packaging, 4.5 to 5.0 mil is the industry standard recommendation, balancing the flexibility needed for automated filling lines with the puncture resistance necessary to prevent dried stems from breaching the barrier. Operators must be vigilant regarding the middle layer: standard metalized polyester (VMPET) offers only basic oxygen barriers, whereas structures utilizing true solid aluminum foil act as a 'flexible can,' dramatically driving down OTR and MVTR near absolute zero.

Ideal For

  • ✓ Dried cannabis flower
  • ✓ Infused gummies
  • ✓ Hard candies
  • ✓ Bulk processing and storage

Not Ideal For

  • ✕ Heavy items with sharp, irregular edges that could puncture 3.5-5.0 mil walls
  • ✕ Concentrated liquid extracts requiring rigid glass or silicone
  • ✕ Products requiring long-term terpene preservation without premium foil layer

Material Specifications

ConstructionMulti-layer laminate: Outer PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) for printing; Middle AL (Aluminum foil) or VMPET (Metalized PET) for barrier; Inner food-grade PE or LLDPE for heat sealing
Thickness3.5 to 7.0 mil (4.5 to 5.0 mil is the standard recommendation for premium cannabis packaging)
Oxygen Barrier (OTR)OTR <= 0.01 to 0.5 cc/m2/day (high-quality foil structures)
Moisture Barrier (MVTR)MVTR <= 0.01 to 1.0 g/m2/day
Light Protection100% opaque when using aluminum foil layer (blocks all UV and visible light)
Odor BarrierComplete - sealed multi-layer mylar with aluminum core blocks all volatile organic compounds and odor

Without proper barrier packaging, oxygen infiltrates the headspace and oxidizes THC into CBN (Cannabinol), severely degrading psychoactive potency and aromatic profile. Under proper storage conditions with low light exposure, temperatures below 70F, and 58-62% relative humidity maintained by premium multi-layer barrier packaging, cannabis flower can retain its cannabinoid and terpene profiles for 12 to 18 months. If the MVTR is too high, the flower dries out and terpenes evaporate; if excess moisture enters, mold risk skyrockets above 65% RH.

Questions

Everything you need to know.

Can you print my brand on the bags?
Yes. Full custom printing is what we do. You send us your artwork files, we handle prepress, plate making, and production. We support Pantone color matching so your bag colors align with your existing brand system, and we offer print effects including foil stamping, metallic inks, and spot UV for premium finishing. If you need help preparing files, we'll tell you exactly what specifications to send. We don't charge you for the privilege of using your own logo.
Are the bags smell-proof and child-resistant?
Our multi-layer barrier construction contains odors effectively because the metallized film blocks the volatile compounds that carry scent. For child resistance, we manufacture bags with CR-certified closures tested to 16 CFR 1700.20 and ASTM D3475. Not every bag we make is child-resistant by default, so if your product requires CR packaging, tell us and we'll spec the right closure. We provide compliance documentation for state licensing and dispensary onboarding.
What's the minimum order?
Minimum order quantities depend on the size, finish, and level of customization. For standard sizes with stock finishes, the MOQ is low. For fully custom bags with specialized print effects or unusual dimensions, the MOQ is higher because we have to cut dies and set up dedicated plate runs. Contact us with your specs and we'll tell you the exact minimum for your project. We don't quote a fake low number and then tell you the real minimum later.
Do you charge plate or setup fees?
No. Our quotes are all-in. The price you receive includes plates, setup, printing, lamination, cutting, and sealing. There's no separate line item for tooling that shows up after you approve the quote. We build every cost into the unit price upfront because that's how honest quoting works. If you reorder the same bag, your plates are already on file and you don't pay for them again.
Do you ship to the United States?
Yes. We ship custom mylar bags to clients across Canada and the United States. Freight costs are included in your quote, so you're not surprised by a shipping invoice after production finishes. Transit times vary by destination and quantity, but we'll give you an honest delivery estimate with your quote. For US clients, we handle the export paperwork on our end.
What's the difference between matte and gloss finish?
Matte has a soft, non-reflective surface that absorbs light and reads as premium and understated. It photographs beautifully and looks high-end on dispensary shelves. Gloss has a high-shine surface that reflects light and makes colors appear more saturated and vivid. It's bold and attention-grabbing. Neither is better, they serve different brand aesthetics. If your brand is quiet luxury, go matte. If your brand is loud and energetic, go gloss. You can also combine them with spot finishes for contrast.
What materials are custom mylar bags made from?
Multi-layer laminate: Outer PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) for printing; Middle AL (Aluminum foil) or VMPET (Metalized PET) for barrier; Inner food-grade PE or LLDPE for heat sealing.
What products are custom mylar bags best for?
Dried cannabis flower, Infused gummies, Hard candies, Bulk processing and storage.
What is the minimum order for custom mylar bags?
MOQ: 1,000 to 5,000 units for digital printing; 10,000 to 50,000 units for flexographic or rotogravure printing. Production takes 10 to 15 business days following digital proof approval.
Is custom mylar bags child-resistant certified?
Available with 16 CFR 1700.20 certified CR zippers (dual-lock or push-and-slide); baseline custom bags often use permanent heat seals with tear notches
Are custom mylar bags FDA compliant?
Food-grade materials (FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 compliant for olefin polymers including PE and LLDPE)
Do custom mylar bags meet Health Canada requirements?
Compliant with plain packaging requirements when manufactured to spec
