Pre-Roll Packaging

The Pre-Roll Boom

Five years ago, pre-rolls were an afterthought. Now they're one of the fastest-growing categories in cannabis retail. The reason is convenience. A customer who doesn't want to grind and roll will grab a pre-roll the same way someone grabs a beer instead of brewing their own. And with infused joints hitting 30% plus THC, the potency has caught up too.

The packaging has to keep up. A single pre-roll in a pop-top tube is still the baseline. But we're seeing two-packs, five-packs, and multi-strain sampler boxes more every month. Each format needs a different approach. A five-pack needs a rigid box with a tray insert, not five loose tubes rattling around. Infused joints need wider tubes because they're hand-dipped and uneven.

Labels are where most pre-roll brands win or lose. The tube is small, so you've got maybe 2 inches of real estate to communicate strain name, THC percentage, government warning, and your logo. We print those labels inline, die-cut to fit the tube, so they wrap clean without gaps.

What surprises new producers is how fast the volume adds up. A pre-roll line running 10,000 units a week needs packaging that arrives on time and prints consistently. We've built our turnaround around that reality. Same-day quotes, and the factory ships within days, not the 6 to 8 weeks a broker will quote you because they're ordering from someone else who's ordering from the factory.

Questions

Everything you need to know.

What tube size fits an infused pre-roll?
Infused joints are wider than standard pre-rolls because of the concentrate coating. A standard 116mm tube won't close. You need a 120mm or wider tube, sometimes called a "king size" or "infused" tube. We stock both. If you're not sure, send us a sample and we'll tell you what fits.
Can I do a custom box for a five-pack of joints?
Yes. We make rigid kraft or white cardstock boxes with custom tray inserts. The insert holds each joint in place so they don't shift during shipping. You can get full-color printing on the box exterior and inside the lid. These are popular for premium and sampler packs.
Do pre-roll tubes need to be child resistant?
If the customer takes the tube home, yes. Pop-top tubes are CR by design. Push-and-turn tubes are CR too but they cost more. If your dispensary transfers the joint to an exit bag at point of sale, some states let you use a non-CR tube. Know your local rule before you order.
How long does a custom pre-roll label run take?
Most label orders ship within 5 to 7 business days from proof approval. If you need them faster, we can rush. The bottleneck is always proof approval, not printing. Get us your artwork in a vector file and approve the digital proof same day, and the factory starts printing.
