Edibles Packaging

Why Edibles Need Different Packaging

Edibles are the one category where the packaging rules overlap. You're not just storing cannabis. You're storing food that contains cannabis. That means the material inside the package has to be FDA food-contact safe, the package has to seal well enough to keep the product fresh, and in most states it has to be child-resistant on top of all that.

Think about a tin of gummies. The tin itself might be metal, which is food-contact safe. But the lid needs a CR mechanism if the customer takes it home. And the inside needs a liner or separate pouch so the gummies don't stick to the metal. Then you need resealability, because nobody eats 10 gummies in one sitting. That's four separate requirements on one small package.

Chocolate is even trickier. It melts. The packaging needs to protect against heat and moisture, not just oxygen. We use thicker barrier films for chocolate edibles and add a cold-chain shipping note for summer orders. If you've ever opened a melted chocolate bar at a dispensary, you know why this matters.

What we make for edibles includes CR tins with resealable liners, mylar pouches with CR zippers, and folding cartons with CR blister inserts. The blister insert is clever. It holds each piece individually so the customer pops one out at a time. That's both portion control and tamper evidence in one design. For beverages, which are growing fast, we're seeing more CR-capable can tops and bottle closures.

Questions

Everything you need to know.

What makes packaging food-grade?
Food-grade means the material that touches your product is approved by the FDA for direct food contact. It won't leach chemicals, and it's manufactured in a facility that meets food safety standards. We use FDA food-contact certified films and liners in every edibles package we make.
Do gummy bags need to be resealable?
They should be. Most states don't explicitly require a resealable closure on edibles, but it's a quality expectation. A customer who opens a bag of 10 gummies, eats one, and can't seal it back up will remember that. A CR zipper closure solves resealability and child resistance at the same time.
Can you make packaging for infused beverages?
We can. Beverage packaging is a different production line because you're dealing with liquid-compatible closures and pressure-rated containers. We source CR-capable can ends and bottle caps for cannabis drinks. Tell us your format, can or bottle, and we'll quote it.
What's the most common mistake with edibles packaging?
Buying a package that looks great but isn't actually food-contact safe. We've seen producers put gummies in printed mylar that's rated for dry goods but not food. The ink can migrate. If you're making edibles, every layer that touches the product needs to be food-grade. No exceptions.
